Collection Size & Strengths

The Art & Architecture Library (AAL) contains over 83,000 volumes, 180 periodical subscriptions, over 280 CD-ROMs and 255,000 slides which support the teaching needs at UCSD. Subjects covered include all aspects of the visual arts including art history, photography, painting, prints, sculpture, performance and conceptual art, and architectural design, history, and landscape architecture.

The AAL is open to the public for research and study. AAL reference, extra-oversize, current periodicals, and controlled circulation (AAL ConCirc) materials do not circulate outside of the Geisel Library. Books circulate to patrons with a valid UCSD library card, including non-affiliates who pay an annual fee to borrow materials from the UCSD Libraries. Slides circulate only to UCSD faculty, students and staff for classroom instruction.

Patrons may obtain assistance in locating and using AAL collections at the AAL Information & Service Desk. Certain collections (slides) and services (in-depth or extended reference, consultation, library instruction) are available only to UCSD students, faculty and staff. Visitors may obtain in-depth reference, research, or document delivery services by contacting the Library PLUS program.
