The Art & Architecture Library (AAL), a part of the UCSD Arts Libraries, contains approximately 70,000 volumes, 227 print periodical and serial subscriptions, 250 CD-ROMs, 270,000 slides, and provides access to hundreds of thousands of digital images in support of the teaching and research needs of the visual arts at UCSD. Subjects covered include art history, photography, painting, prints, sculpture, performance and conceptual art, and architectural design, history, and landscape architecture. The AAL is open to the public for research and study. Books circulate to patrons with a valid UCSD library card, including non-affiliates who pay an annual fee to borrow materials from the UCSD Libraries. Circulating books are checked out and returned to the main Circulation Desk near the entrance to the Geisel Library. AAL reference, extra-oversize, current periodicals, and controlled circulation materials can be used onsite. Slides circulate only to UCSD faculty, students and staff.
Patrons may obtain assistance in locating and using AAL collections at the AAL Information & Service Desk. Certain collections (slides and digital images) and services (in-depth or extended reference, consultation, library instruction, and slide production) are available only to UCSD students, faculty and staff. Visitors may obtain in-depth reference, research, or document delivery services by contacting the PLUS Information Services.
Collections (use Roger, the UCSD online catalog, for access to collections)
Books & bound journals
Books and bound journals are arranged by Library of Congress call numbers including the N's (art) and TR's (photography). In addition to the regular AAL stack location, separate sections for oversize and extra-oversize materials are provided.
Current issues of journals & serials
The Library subscribes to approximately 227 art, architecture, and photography journals and serials. Current issues received are shelved by call number in the AAL current journals area. In addition, access is provided to approximately 200 electronic journals in the visual arts via Roger and Sage (UCSD's gateway to the web).
Reference materials
Encyclopedias, dictionaries, periodical indexes, bibliographies, and biographical tools are available for support of visual art and architecture research. Major indexes, such as Art Full-Text and Art Retrospective, ABM (Art Bibliography Modern), BHA (Bibliography of the History of Art) the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Index to 19th-century American Art Periodicals, and the comprehensive encyclopedia, Grove Art Online are available via the web for all users on campus computers or remptely via the campus proxy server to UCSD students, faculty and staff only Please see the Art & Architecture homepage for access to these licensed databases.
AAL Controlled Circulation materials
The AAL ConCirc collection contains materials requiring special care and protection. These items are available for paging all hours the AAL desk is staffed. You will be required to present a valid UCSD ID and the staff will retrieve up to five items at a time for your use. Materials must be used in the AAL slide collection area and returned to the AAL Desk before closing.
Visual resources, slides and digital images
The Visual Resources Collection consists of 270,000 slides in addition to hundreds of thousands of digital images accessible to UCSD users via ARTstor, all in support of classroom instruction and course reserves. Slide records are searchable in Roger, the UCSD Libraries online catalog. Slides circulate to UCSD faculty, students and staff for UCSD classroom use only.
CD-ROMs
AAL CD-ROMs are located at the AAL Desk. Non-reference items circulate to UCSD patrons.
Video, film, DVDs and audio formats
Media supporting visual arts and architecture are listed in Roger and housed in the Music/Film & Video Library (west wing of the Geisel Library). Select videos and DVDs circulate for 3 days to UCSD faculty, staff and graduate students. Equipment and facilities are available for onsite playback of sound and film materials.
Special Services
Slide Production
UCSD faculty, staff and students may request slides to be made to support classroom teaching and presentations for UCSD courses. Criteria for fulfilling a request includes: the image must not already exist in the collection, it must contribute to the development of the collection, and are made within the guidelines of the U. S. Copyright Law. All produced slides are the property of the UCSD Libraries. A minimum of two weeks is required to process a request.
Digital Image Reserves
UCSD faculty may request that AAL slides and art images found in print resources owned by the UCSD Libraries be digitized and made available to students enrolled in UCSD classes. Images are only accessible for the duration of the class. A minimum of 3 days is required to process a request of up to 25 images. As an alternative, faculty may choose to use ARTstor to provide students with access to course-specific reserve images.
Graduate Student Lockers
Lockers are available for currently enrolled UCSD Visual Arts, Music, Film, Theatre and Dance and other graduate students engaged in extensive research using UCSD Arts Libraries materials. Please email artslockers@ucsd.edu for more information and an application.
