This guide is intended to help you find information about the architecture on the UCSD campus.
The Campus
The University of California, San Diego campus, covering 1,200 acres
along the Pacific Ocean, was started in 1960 from the consolidation of
two military bases. With at least five Master Plans in its history, and
with varying degrees of ambition and budgetary constraints, it is not surprising
that the campus is home to considerable diversity, architecturally speaking.
The University buildings range from the spartan barracks of the old military
installations to the high-profile Modernist showpiece of the Geisel Library
tower. Recently, landscape projects such as Library Walk have been created
in an attempt to unify some of this diversity, as well as rationalize movement
across the sprawling campus. Also, the site-specific sculptures of the
Stuart Collection, positioned around the University by the artists themselves,
lend an air of critical awareness, self-consciousness, and sophistication
uncharacteristic of the campus in general. Perhaps the most enduring feature
of the University landscape, the remaining groves of eucalyptus trees,
screen or at least distract from the less successful architectural attempts,
and offer a connection with the early use of the area as a lumber plantation.
Finding Articles about UCSD Architecture
The AVERY INDEX TO ARCHITECTURAL PERIODICALS is very useful for finding articles about the buildings and projects on the UC campus. This database is accessible through the Melvyl Catalog under "Choose a database." It’s also available through the AAL homepage at http://aal.ucsd.edu.
Try typing University of California San Diego as a subject. When you find something that interests you check ROGER for the availability and call number of the journal. Recent issues (a year old or less) can be found in the current periodical stacks; older issues are bound and shelved by call number order on the regular book stacks.
Also, as a source for local newspaper articles about UCSD try the Union-Tribune Archives, available at http://infoweb.newsbank.com/, covering articles back to 1984.
Modern San Diego http://www.modernsandiego.com/UCSD.html is good for general information on architecture and architects on the UCSD campus and the surrounding area.
On the following pages are some citations of articles pertaining to buildings and projects at UCSD and the Salk Institute, with their call #s. These can be found among the regular book stacks of the Art and Architecture Library.
