Current UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students may borrow materials from the UC San Diego Library and libraries worldwide. Your UC San Diego ID card is your library card. Other patrons are eligible for borrowing privileges upon registration. See Library Cards & Loan Periods for details.

Request & Hold Books

Users can request UC San Diego Library items listed as “Available” in the online catalog, Roger, to be retrieved and made available through curbside pickupMaterials will be held for you for up to 7 days. Items held at the Annex from Special Collections & Archives will be made available for use in Geisel Library’s Special Collections & Archives unit during its hours.

  • Materials from the Annex - Requests will arrive within 4 business days.
  • Materials from Geisel & BLB - You’ll receive a notice within 1 to 4 business days when the item is available for pick-up.

Submit Your Request

  • For UC San Diego affiliates, locate the desired items in Roger and click the ‘Request’ link from the next screen.
  • For all others, use the Request Form. Non-cardholders may leave the barcode field blank.

Curbside Pickup

All current library cardholders may use contactless Campus Curbside Pickup.

Items paged via Roger Request will be checked out remotely and made available for curbside pickup. Items available via HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service are not eligible for this service.

  • Hours: 9:00 am - 6:00 pm, Monday - Friday
  • Locations: Campus Curbside Pickup,
    • Vehicles: Enter Osler parking structure from Gilman Drive and look for designated spaces to the left.
    • Pedestrians & Cyclists: In front of Campus Curbside Pickup building.

How it works:

  1.  Request available item(s).
    • UCSD students, faculty, and staff use Roger Request.
    • Community borrowers can place requests by submitting a Request Form.
  2. Wait for an email from letting you know your item is ready for pickup.
    • Most items are available for pickup within 3 business days.
  1. Arrive at Campus Curbside Pickup (by car, bicycle, or on foot) and follow the directions on the posted signs.
    • Your item will be brought to you at the curbside service location within 10 minutes.
    • Follow social distancing guidelines and wait until staff are at least 6 feet away before approaching or retrieving items.
    • Check due dates and renew items online.

Scan Articles and Book Chapters (digital delivery)

UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students can request scanned chapters of items from most of the Library’s print collection free of charge, using one of the following options.  Requests will be delivered electronically to the email address provided within 3 business days of submission. Temporary privileges will be granted to other library cardholders. Members of the general public are not eligible for scanning of locally-owned materials, unless they are held at the Annex, as noted below.

Scan Requests from Roger

  • UCSD students, faculty, and staff use the item's record in the Library catalog and click the scan button on the right navigation menu. UCSD ID required
  • Community borrowers can place requests by submitting a Request Form. UCSD ID NOT required.

Citation Linker

  • UCSD ID required.
  • Get immediate access to journal articles, books, and other publications (or request them when unavailable) by entering a title and other citation information.

Consult Roger before submitting a request, as the article you need may be available electronically for immediate use.

Other library cardholders, members of the general public can have articles and book chapters from materials stored in the Annex scanned and digitally delivered free of charge.

Borrow from Other Libraries

UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff may request books, articles, and other items that are not available at UC San Diego. Items obtained on loan usually arrive within 7 business days.  Articles are delivered electronically within 3 business days.  See the Interlibrary Loan service for more information. UC San Diego affiliates may also request items from other local libraries through San Diego Circuit.


Return materials at book return bins.  Bins are located outside Geisel Library’s entrance or outside the north and south entrances of the Biomedical Library Building. Additionally, drive-up return bins are located on Hopkins Drive, just west of Geisel Library.

Course Reserves Return

Course Reserves must be returned to the Front Desk from which the material was borrowed. After-hours book returns are located next to Geisel Library’s entrance. During Geisel Overnight Study Commons hours, course reserves may also be returned to the Geisel Front Desk book drop.


Renew UC San Diego Materials

  1. Go to My Library Account / Renew Items.
  2. Log in with the barcode on the back of your UC San Diego ID card.
  3. If this is the first time you login, you will need to create a PIN. Do this by leaving the Enter your PIN box blank and clicking Submit. You will be prompted to create a new PIN on the next screen.
  4. Check the box next to the item(s) you want to renew, and select Renew Checked Items.

You can also renew items at the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings, or by phone at 858-534-0134. Items with recalls or holds, or in fine status, cannot be renewed.

Renew Interlibrary Loan Materials 

Request renewal of your Interlibrary Loan materials by logging into My ILL Request or by contacting ILL.

  1. Click My ILL Requests (some instructions below).
  2. Log in with the barcode on the back of your UC San Diego ID card.
  3. Renew the item(s).

Submit renewal requests up to one week before the due date. Requests submitted after the item's due date may result in late fees. Allow 4 to 5 business days for a final response.



If another UC San Diego faculty, staff, or student needs an item that is checked out, he or she may recall the item. This will shorten the original loan period for the current borrower. 

Items may be recalled by using the Request feature in Roger, or by contacting the Front Desk. A recall notice will be sent to the current borrower indicating the new due date. The amount of time a user will be given to return a recalled item will vary by item type. A notice will be sent to the requestor when the recalled item is available for pick-up. Items returned after the recall date will be subject to overdue charges.

This doesn't seem fair. Why can my books get recalled?

Recalls are common in academic libraries. Instead of offering shorter loan periods to everyone (requiring you to renew your books every two weeks), we offer a longer loan period, with the caveat that the book may be recalled earlier if it is needed by another user.

I don’t want to inconvenience anyone else. Is there another option?

Yes! Instead of recalling books from other users, you can try requesting a copy from another library. Try Circuit for speedy service, or Interlibrary Loan, which usually takes about the same amount of time as waiting for your recall to come in.

My book got recalled. Can you make the other person request it through one of the alternatives above, instead?

Unfortunately not. We do our best to educate everyone about all the options, but once a request is made, it can’t simply be swapped for another copy at another institution. We can, however, help you request another copy.

Visit the Annex for On-Site Viewing

UCSD faculty, staff, and students needing to view large runs of journals or other items may visit the Annex (located in the Miramar area off Trade Street) in person between 8am and 2pm Monday through Friday by making an appointment in advance. Email desired date, arrival time, and a list of materials needed to or call (858) 653-6641. Materials are retrieved in advance and available in the reading room when you arrive. For safety reasons, browsing Annex shelves is not permitted.

Search for Missing Items

If you can't find an item on the shelf and it is listed as “Available” in Roger, report it missing by contacting the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings. Library staff will verify the item’s status and shelving location, and initiate a search if the item cannot be located.

Check UC San Diego Email for Library Notices

The UC San Diego Library sends all notices by email. Library notices for UC San Diego faculty, staff, and students are sent to your official UC San Diego email address.

The Library is not responsible for notices that are not received. Failure to respond to notices can result in suspension of Library borrowing privileges and the assessment of Library fines and/or fees. If you do not receive Library notices, contact the Front Desk of the Geisel or Biomedical Library Buildings.
